After another successful theatrical release in 2009 this time in 3D, Toy Story 3 was commissioned.Ĭomposer Randy Newman wrote two new songs for the film as well as the original score and one of these, “When She Loved Me,” was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song, though Phil Collins won for “You’ll be in My Heart,” from another Disney Classic, Tarzan. Toy Story 2 is considered by many critics to outshine the original and it frequently ranks highly in lists of the best animated films of all time. It eclipsed box office takings set by both the original Toy Story and A Bug’s Life which had taken up so much of Pixar’s time.

Director John Lasseter and his team reworked the entire plot in one weekend and with the release date already set, a production process that would usually take months was compressed into nine short months and Toy Story 2 was given a full theatrical release. However, the story reels looked promising but Disney/ Pixar were unhappy with the quality. Production took place in a much smaller building next to Pixar’s usual studios as all their main animators were tied up working on the atrocity that is A Bug’s Life. Released in 1999, Toy Story 2 was actually envisaged as a direct to video sequel as many Disney sequels are. Woody tells Buzz he’s not worried about Andy discarding him anymore because whatever happens they’ll have each other and Wheezy, with his squeaker repaired, ends the film with a Sinatra style rendition of “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” When Andy gets back from Cowboy Camp he assumes his mom has bought the new toys for him and happily accepts them. With help from Buzz, Woody manages to rescue her and they return home.

They also manage to free Bullseye but Jessie ends up on the plane. Woody asks the Roundup toys to come home with him, but they are prevented from leaving by Stinky Pete, who wants to go to the museum because he never sold to children.Īl arrives and takes the toys to the airport, and the rest of the gang, assisted by 3 toy aliens follow, entering the baggage handling system where they manage to free Woody and stuff Stinky Pete into a little girl’s Barbie backpack. They make their way to Al’s apartment where real Buzz joins them and, after proving he is the one who is Andy’s toy, tries to convince Woody to come home with them, reminding him that a toy’s true purpose is to be played with, and to bring joy to children. Fake Buzz joins the gang, who have no idea he is not the real Buzz. Buzz accidentally gets imprisoned in a cardboard box by another Buzz Lightyear action figure, who thinks he is a Space Ranger. Meanwhile Buzz and the gang are on the most hilarious rescue mission around Al’s Toy Barn, and they meet tour guide Barbie along the way. Woody decides to stay with his roundup gang, believing that all toys are eventually discarded by their owners. Stinky Pete warns Woody the same fate will befall him if he stays with Andy whereas the museum will love him forever. Woody learns that Jessie used to be the much loved doll of a girl called Emily, and in a heartbreakingly sad montage to a beautiful song called “When She Loved Me,” we learn that Emily grew up and left for college, leaving Jessie behind to be given away. Woody is upset and wants to return home to Andy but Jessie gets angry, saying the museum will only be interested in taking them if Woody is part of the collection. He is now set to be sold to a museum in Tokyo along with the other toys from the show, Jessie the Cowgirl, Bullseye the horse and Stinky Pete the Prospector.

In Al’s apartment, Woody discovers he is a valuable collector’s toy who used to star in a 1950’s TV show called Woody’s Roundup. Buzz and the gang recognise the thief as Big Al, the owner of Al’s Toy Barn, and Buzz, Rex, Hamm, Mr Potato and Slinky Dog set out to rescue him.

When Andy’s mom takes Wheezy and puts him in a yard sale, Woody rescues him but in doing so gets himself accidentally stolen by a toy collector. Now he just sits gathering dust and generally wheezing, which makes Woody afraid he will be forgotten. While up there, Woody meets Wheezy the Penguin, who was put on the shelf when his squeaker stopped working. Reluctantly he leaves Woody behind, and Andy’s mother places him high up on a shelf. As Andy prepares to go to Cowboy Camp he picks up Woody to take him along but realises his right arm is ripped. Set a few years after the events of Toy Story, we see Woody and Buzz living happily side by side. Following on from last week’s introduction to Woody and the gang, it’s time to see how they all fared in the sequel Toy Story 2.
